  Women and Empowerment March 2003

Following the series of AMAR/UNESCO Conferences on Europe and Islam, AMAR organised, in partnership with the British Council, a Conference in Brussels in March 2003, Dialogue Between Civilisations: Women’s Empowerment. The keynote address was given by HRH the Princess Basma bint Talal of Jordan. Issues address included business and finance, media and the arts, public health, and governance. A large number of those attending were under 25. One session was held in the European Parliament.
Between 1995 and 2001 AMAR worked with UNESCO on a series of conferences exploring the roots and development of Islamic and western civilisations in order to uncover hidden questions and the sources of anger, to dispel prejudice and to identify and promote communalities.

Four conferences were held in Oxford, London and Paris. The forum was initiated by the Chairman of AMAR, Baroness Nicholson of Winterbourne MEP, in partnership with the former Director General of UNESCO, Dr Federico Mayor.
