Following
the American-led war in Afghanistan in 2001/2002 another wave of
refugees sought shelter in Iran.
AMAR, building on its expertise with Iraqi refugees, has provided
access
to basic medical care for those refugees not in camps, living in
squatter settlements in Mashad and Robat-e-Karim.
The
project aimed at building capacity among Afghans to deliver and participate
in
the planning and utilisation of community based health services.
The project objectives were tailored to the Iranian Ministry of Health
and Medical Sciences’ Master Plan for Health. It has also brought
its expertise to improve sanitary conditions in the camps, thus significantly
improving the conditions of a marginalized population in acute poverty.
